Hans Hurch, VIENNALE

After the success in 1996 DV8-Film and VIENNALE have teamed up again this year to present the ‚identities. Queer Film Festival‘.

‚identities‘ will bring the latest of queer film and video to Vienna and highlight a survey of the visually and artistically most challenging queer features, shorts and documentaries to be found in the film festival circuit like All Over Me, Bent, The Brandon Teena Story, The Hanging Garden or Un©ut – to name but a few.

Apart from the internationally acclaimed award winning queer festival hits ‚identities‘ offers special programme spotlights.

One of ‚identities‘ main focus is the transgender issue in cinema. The festival is proud to present the multiple award winning documentary The Brandon Teena Story, which not only offers a ground breaking view of transgender issues but also takes a close look on social structures, values and prejudices and society‘s dealing with gender and the power related to it. Dandy Dust, long awaited new feature of Austria’s queer asset Hans Scheirl, and Jewels Barker experimental St. Pelagius and the Penitent are two other examples of the diversity in treating the subject.

Further emphasis will be on Asia’s ways of dealing with gender on screen. GaySia will bring a few gems like Summer Vacation 1999 and Ji Sor/Intimates.

Finally the festival is proud of its focus on ‚Homosexuality and Jewish identities‘. Showing the filmed version of Martin Sherman‘s acclaimed drama Bent, the moving British documentary Love Story, Berlin 1942 or the Canadian short Surving Memory are an attempt to create a political as well as historical awareness in view of Austria’s dealing with its history and involvement in WWII.

Continuing the festival’s tradition Anders als die Andern (Different than the Others) from 1919 and Sweden’s first gay film Vingarne are fine examples of early queer film-making and a programme of queer avantgarde from Jean Genet to Barbara Hammer will complete this year’s selection of films.

To make the festival an unforgettable event an unprecedented number of guests will attend, being around for film talks, panels and fun at less formal occasions.
